Vogue Sales Sag on Newsstands if not in overall magazines subscriptions
There is a new trend in fashion magazines sales where the sales of such magazines at the newsstand seem to be falling. This is a trend across the board with almost all fashion magazines reporting lower and slower off-take at regular newsstands. For instance, Vogue has seen a 15.1% drop in sales of single copies of the popular fashion magazine with fall in sales of Allure have been 17.2%, Marie Claire at 14.6% and Lucky with 11.7% decline. While this is true of the newsstand sales, the impact on overall magazines subscriptions was not clear.
The trend in falling newsstand sales can be attributed to the weakness in the economy which has impacted the fashion magazine industry too. However, a lot of fashion publishers have been comforting themselves with the thought that their magazines subscriptions are thriving well in the online versions. There is a widespread belief that as far as media trends go, print belongs to the past, with slick online versions leading the charge in these times.
There have been some magazines that have bucked the trend with Harper’s Bazaar adding 0.3% in newsstand sales and Vanity Fair reporting a massive 5% increase. But the greatest increase has been in health oriented magazines with Health reporting a huge 11.1% hike in newsstand sales. Figures on Magazines subscriptions in totality, were not available for comparison.
