The (All-Inclusive) List: Shoe Trends 2010

The fashion world has taken the shoe, a highly utilitarian part of the wardrobe, and turned it into a statement of personal style. Most of the hot shoe trends of 2010 did so much more than cover and protect the feet. In fact, some styles barely covered the feet at all. Here’s a complete list of the shoes that were most popular among men and women over the past year.

1. Thongs and Flops.

Whether you’re planning to spend a day at the beach or the evening mingling at someone’s patio get-together, flip flops and thongs are an easy choice. With a wide range of color options for men and women, these barely-there shoes let the feet breathe. For women, most thongs had a flat heel and a built-in comfort. Decked out in adornments such as sequins, bead work, and faux precious stones, these shoes transitioned seamlessly from day to night. Men found style and comfort with flip-flops. Perfectly paired with clothes designed to be “casual cool,” flops were the preferred choice for guys during the warm weather months.

2. Feminine Pumps.

Obviously, this category is for the ladies. Pumps covered in lace, nude fabrics, and leopard prints embraced the foot, making it look super sexy and feminine. Designers such as Gucci and Christian Louboutin offered their own take on this trend. The upside of this style was that women could achieve a seductive look without having to endure the pain of stiletto heels. Speaking of pain…

3. Stiletto Spikes.

Pair them with tight pants, a business suit, or a short skirt and you’ve got a dynamite look. Stilettos rarely fall out of favor and continued to earn adoration from fashionistas during 2010. The spring brought some funky versions of stilettos, such as the creation by Alexandra Neel that incorporated pearls and fur!

4. Patent Leather and Glossy.

A popular material for shoes this year, patent leather made its way onto the feet of men and women. Classic dress shoes for men came in patent leather. Women saw patent leather used to make Mary Janes and certain boots, such as the “Yugo” by Stuart Weitzman.

5. Tall Boots.

Call these boots drama for your legs. High boots that reach to the knee or even above it were popular with women in 2010. There were many choices of materials, though black was the dominant color. Some of the more adventurous designs used fur, wedge heels, and platforms.

6. Short Boots.

Not to be outdone by their taller siblings, these boots gave women many choices too. From open-toes to cutouts, some of these designs obliterated the notion that boots are supposed to cover the foot completely. Shapely and feminine details were popular on booties, such as the lace-covered darlings by House of Harlow.

7. Sneakers.

While women like a good sneaker, this trend belonged to the men in 2010. Vibrant, colorful takes on this traditional shoe gave them a fresh look.

With so many designers choosing to have fun with these trends in 2010, there was no shortage of styles. You could find something to suit almost any taste.

Holidays Are About Accessories

Holiday parties are a fantastic excuse for the average girl to get all glammed up. Cocktail dresses, rhinestone jewelry, and ridiculously high heels are always in style around the end of the year. Lucky girls will have half a dozen events to attend around the holidays, but everyone should at least have one work party worth dressing up for. Some even feel that these parties are the perfect excuse to wear a festive costume. Remember, the holidays are about accessories, so feel free to have fun with your party outfits.

Finding the right dress is trickier than most people realize. You want to look and feel sexy, but a work party requires at least a modicum of decency. Luckily, satin and silk sheens are always in style around the holidays and instantly jazz up what would otherwise be a simple, maybe even boring, dress in a different fabric. After the perfect dress is chosen, it is time to really spruce up the look with some fun accessories.

Take the opportunity to really let some bright and sparkly jewelry shine. This is the one time of year big earrings and necklaces are almost always appropriate. As with any occasion, the right shoes can be a real show-stopper. If you have chosen to go with bright accessories keep the embellishment on the shoes to a minimum. The purse is the final piece to the perfect party look. Cocktail dresses go great with festive little clutches. Matching the bag with the shoes is no longer the rule, but when wearing a holiday outfit with many colors and accessories it may be prudent to use this slightly old-fashioned advice.

Some people want to channel another persona at a holiday party. A Santa hat paired with a red dress is an instant Mrs. Claus look. A fun pointy cap with matching shoes equals a frisky elf running around the party. A Cindy-Lou Who hat is seasonally appropriate and a fun throwback to a childhood favorite. Just by carrying a wand around while wearing a fuller ball gown instantly makes everyone think of Glinda the Good Witch. A costume can really be that easy. That perfect dress only needs to be spruced up. Accessories make the look.

Some people don’t want a simple allusion to a costume; they want to go all out. Their costumes can always be accessorized to truly take it the next level. Most Marilyn Monroe costumes are a blonde wig and white dress. Add some false eyelashes to make the eyes really pop. Thigh-high boots enhance just about every “sexy” costume there is. That Mrs. Claus costume from the earlier paragraph? Add some marabou trim to the hem of the dress and no one will mistake her for anyone else. A candy cane, either held in the hand all night or tucked into the waistband of a black patent leather belt, is the final touch on the most holiday appropriate costume of them all.

Have a blast at all of your holiday get-togethers. When your outfit is the highlight of the party, I am confident you will have nothing but fun.

Top Jewelry Trends for Fall and Winter 2010

Jewelry Lovers Find Cause to Celebrate This Holiday Season!

The rebounding economy may be lackluster, but you certainly can’t tell it by the jewelry! Design trends for fall and winter promise bigger-than-ever razzle-dazzle with strong emphasis on the individualist. Anticipate bracelets and necklaces of bold metallics in combinations of sterling, gold, and burnished bronze. You style conscious fashionistas will drool over the new multi-strands of big gauge chain adorned with faceted medallions and luscious nuggets of crystal and stone; dangly earrings; and costume accessories practical enough to go from the office to the cocktail party without breaking your bankroll.

For the Sophisticated Urban Gypsy

This season’s return to casual belted sweater layers and blouses with ruffled cuffs and plunging necklines provide the perfect opportunity to show off a signature piece; necklaces, bracelets, and rings with brand distinction, like Yurman or Winston. Chandelier earrings and big metallic hoops are even more popular than ever, but this year jewelry designers have added exotic touches of genuine moonstone, onyx, and amethyst, or Austrian crystals set in a dark background of twinkling marcasite for a vintage feel.

Heavy Metal

Expect to see rhinestone brooches and earrings with hoops of bright silver intertwined with ropes of antiqued sterling; toggle clasps richly embellished with dots of gold, garnets, topaz, and citrine—warm and earthy semi-precious stones that compliment every skin tone, and which are classic, but casual enough to wear every day with skinny jeans, leather bags, and dressy boots.

Beads are all the rage this year, and cultured pearls of every color strung on leather, multiple strands of coral, and Flintstone-chunky necklaces of polished stone. Pair inexpensive costume watches with rows of bangle bracelets dripping with oodles of charms for that festive holiday jingle that says, “you’ve arrived.”

Now, more than ever before, it’s hip to be humble, so don’t afraid to amp it up and be playful and campy. Pile on the glam and pay homage to all that glitters; great style doesn’t necessarily have to be solid gold. Go ahead and add classic touches of sparkling vermeil. No one will be the wiser, and with so many beautiful designs by names like Monet, Koors, and Anne Klein, you’ll get that quality look and won’t have to derail your holiday budget.

Regal Jewels Fit for the “Bling” Dynasty

Chocolate gold is finally here, straight from the runways of Milan. Like the name implies, its dark rich tones are as yummy as hot fudge when strung with alternate beads of pink gold, burnished brass, shiny copper, sterling, and titanium. Of course, diamonds are always on the fashion menu, but this year, expect to see variations set in bands of tungsten and brushed metal. Swarovski crystals offer affordable alternatives and give maximum bling-for-the-buck. For that significant hunk on your gift list, there are brushed stainless chains, bracelets and rings, and diamonds in silver trim with touches of black Harley leather.

With so many great items to choose from, you’ll have no shortage of Autumn gifts and stocking-stuffers to add to your seasonal wish list.
