Holiday Origins

Most costumes come from the origins of the holiday or its more present-day derivations, present day being quite relative. In other words, the kinds of costumes usually depict the significance of the holiday.

• Valentine’s Day, which is celebrated on February 14th, has to do with falling in love. Dress up as Cupid or pull out a red-themed costume to celebrate love.

• St. Patrick’s Day, on March 17th, came in honor of St. Patrick. Although he was not really Irish, he spent most of his life in Ireland and brought Christianity to the country. He died on March 17th. Celebrate the holiday with shamrocks, leprechauns, green- and orange-themed costumes, or Irish costumes.

• Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Closely related to this, it represents new life. From this comes the Easter bunny and egg traditions. Dress up as the Easter Bunny or celebrate a Fred Astaire party with an Easter parade and your Sunday best. Pastel color themes work well for this holiday.

• Mardi Gras, like Easter, falls on a different date each year. It is a day to “let your hair” down and party before the beginning of Lent. This is one holiday when you can let your imagination run as wild as your behavior. Dress in color-themed costumes featuring purple, green, and gold. Have a masquerade party or dress as spectres or jokers.

• Cinco de Mayo, which is May 5th as its name implies in Spanish, is Independence Day in Mexico. Go traditional with historical Mexican dress, get in touch with your inner romantic with a Zorro costume, or host a costume party focused around one of Mexico’s famous dances, like the ballet folklorico.

• The Fourth of July is held in commemoration of the American day of Independence. Dress up like a patriot, wear funny hair and wooden teeth, or dress up like Uncle Sam. Any red, white, and blue theme will work, too.

• Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday of November and is a day of gratitude. The natural costume for this holiday is an Indian or a pilgrim. Add some fun by dressing up as a turkey or acornucopia.

No matter what the holiday, costumes have become more and more a part of it. If you want to dress up…go for it. You might feel more sociable dressed up, and you can have more fun. You can find great costumes online or make your own, so have a ball!
